Abstract
The effects of shunt capacitor banks on the harmonic distortion in a radial power distribution system have been evaluated and discussed in this paper. To assess the harmonic pollution level, some indices such as the telephone influence factor (TIF), the total demand distortion (TDD) and total harmonic distortion (THD) are introduced first. Modeling of distribution system loads for harmonic studies and a novel algorithm for harmonic power flow are also presented. Four cases considering the placement and deterioration of shunt capacitor banks were examined using a five-bus test system. The results are of value to engineers and experts for planning and designing better power distribution systems with high power quality and system efficiency.
