Abstract
A dual-planar RFID tag is designed and developed. Its performance is verified with both simulated and experimental results. The novel design proposed here gives a 3-dB beamwidth of 152deg and a gain of 4.65 dBi at 2.44 GHz. The proposed design greatly reduces the sensitivity to orientation and to conductive material of the conventional RFID system, which degrades its performance. The dual-planar RFID antenna is formed by bending of a flat uni-planar rectangular microstrip patch by 90deg at the centre. The RFID antenna is tested in the RFID research laboratory for the return loss and in the anechoic chamber for the radiation patterns. The design chosen can be placed along any of the vertical edges of a pallet/box with no radiation back into the pallet/box on which it is fixed.
