Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to develop electrodes for electrical stimulation of the nervous system using conductive polymers, polypyrrole (PPy) and/or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxy-thiophene), (PEDOT). We evaluated biocompatibility in mouse fibroblasts and/or myoblasts. Cultured cells on PPy and/or PEDOT showed extended neuritis and survived for over one week. These experiments have demonstrated that conductive polymers such as PPy and PEDOT have high biocompatibility and are applicable to nerve stimulation electrodes.
