Abstract

There are a lot of benefits for the electricity, water or gas users as well as the providers by using the prepaid metering system. In this paper the design of a system, which can be used for data transmission between the personal computer and smart card is described. Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 is used to write the programs for communication between the personal computer and the smart card. Programs are used to issue the smart card for the customers and to increase or decrease the credit inside the smart card. The smart card interface device is used to transmit the data from the personal computer to the smart card. The device will transmit the data in half-duplex mode. The system designed in this project can be used as a starting point to develop a more complex system where a smart card can be used for several applications.
