Abstract
This paper deals with the relationship between the properties of the materials used in optical fiber manufacturing - glass fiber and polymer coating - and the optical and mechanical reliability of the fibers. The measurable materials and reliability parameters are described, as well as the experimental techniques used for their measurement. Two case studies are given which shows how improper materials properties can adversely affect the optical and mechanical reliability of the fibers, resulting in poor field performance.
