Abstract :
Recently, a new industrial format for archiving digital pictures has been proposed, that is the Windows Media Photo (WMP). It claims nice features such as superior data compression ratios, better image quality, and new archiving/processing options. This paper aims at reviewing the architecture of this novel encoder and evaluating its performance against existing codecs, either available from standardization or as consumer products, in terms of image quality, compression and computational complexity.
