Abstract :
Many multiple-digital-signal-processor (DSP) systems are not flexible enough to incorporate both additional tasks and new DSP elements. A possible philosophy for a universal´ system without these drawbacks is developed. Basic tasks are defined very generally. They are mapped on general basic system elements: processing units, communication channels, processing control, and real-time interfaces. The restrictions for the actual implementation of each element are reduced to the necessary minimum, i.e. a communication standard. A realized system of this type is presented, based on a certain DSP board, but with other units and tasks easily inserted. A sample application in speech coding that utilizes these features is shown: a 14.5 kb/s real-time speech codec.<>
