Abstract :
Foveated imaging is an important means for viewer guidance. However, its implementation is often coupled with a strong need for computing power, which especially applies to already compressed contents. This publication proposes a method for on-demand foveation within Motion-JPEG2000 encoded video. This is mostly accomplished by taking advantage of the beneficial property of the DWT and options for a frame-wise random spatial access to the contents. As all required operations are fully accomplished in JPEG2000 domain by examining and processing encoded contents, complexity is low. The removal of data not contributing to the foveation also leads to a significantly increased compression performance. The proposed procedure does not violate the compliance of the video stream, and thus can be easily migrated into existing multimedia communication systems.
