Abstract
The paper describes experiences of applying metrics within the IT industry. It concentrates upon some of the real issues involved in collecting data, in terms of convincing management and IT staff to invest in a metrics program. The paper recommends an incremental approach to introducing a software metrics program, with the emphasis of demonstrating the value of such a program at an early stage. The question of appropriate data techniques is explored, and how these can feed into management decision making
