Abstract
GFP, LAPS and PPP are popular encapsulation protocols in EoS. Traditionally, encapsulation protocol processing is carried out by hardware implementation, which is lack of flexibility. At the same time, general purpose processor cores are unfit to handle network processing. This article presents a case study of instruction-set optimization for encapsulation protocol processing. It suggests a possible instruction-set architecture that can speedup GFP and LAPS protocol processing upto 7.9 and 4.2 times, respectively. The simulation results indicate that processor with specialized instruction-set can become feasible solution for such application domain. Our instruction-set optimization approach is of benefit to the design of next generation programmable protocol processor.
