Abstract :
This paper describes our philosophy and modus operandi in developing the design component of our computer engineering curriculum at the University of Notre Dame around a powerful set of electronic design automation tools. It describes the transition from the use of point tools on several computer platforms to the use of Mentor Graphics integrated EDA tools on SPARC workstations, and illustrates the integration of these tools into six undergraduate courses. We summarize the reactions of students and faculty to this program, with respect to educational benefits, tool availability and usage, and resource commitments
