Abstract
The use of short range radio applications are in trend since they have a lot of attractive features, e.g. mobility, flexibility, and ease of use. Some popular applications of short range radio devices are Bluetooth based devices that operate in the unlicensed 2.4GHz frequency band. However, the problems that arise over a wireless link cause much degradation in their performance and need to be overcome. This paper presents the possibility to overcome such problems over a wireless link by the use of error control coding, known as a channel coding. Assessment is carried out by investigating several different coding techniques, evaluating them by their error performance over distance in both AWGN and Rayleigh fading channels, using Matlab programming software. The evaluation shows that a proper coding technique will give superior performance. This results in increased reliability as well as an increase in the operating range.
