Abstract :
In this paper, the application of high protocol layer error models for simulating mobile reception of digital video broadcasting - handheld (DVB-H) in mobile urban field conditions is considered. For this purpose, a parameterized error model is used, where the model parameters are determined from the received signal strength and receiver speed, which may be obtained either from measurements or using network planning tools. Several application approaches for these models are suggested and their suitability for different simulation scenarios is considered. The evaluated models offer significant reduction in resource requirements for simulating the DVB-H system, both in terms of potentially reducing the need for costly field measurement campaigns, and also due to the simplified simulation structure facilitated by the finite-state error models used in constructing packet error traces.
