Abstract :
Buffer analysis is the core function of spatial analysis of GIS, and buffer generation also plays an important role in the software-development of GIS. This paper probes into the basic questions and summarizes the current progress in the research into buffer generation algorithms. There are two types among existing algorithms of buffer generation, i.e. raster algorithms and vector algorithms. This paper analyses the existing algorithms systematically and reviews them from the algorithm characteristics, performance, applicability, and other aspects. Furthermore, it discusses the existing difficulties in buffer generation and provides some ideas for improvement.
