  • Abstract
The guard channel scheme for radio channel allocation in cellular networks gives resource access priority to handoff calls over new calls in admission control. This reduces handoff call blocking probability significantly at the expense of a small increase in new calls blocking probability. The effectiveness of the guard channel scheme has been demonstrated under fixed channel assignment (FCA). In this paper we propose a variable reservation scheme for cellular networks, which adapts the number of reserved channels, according to the current number of ongoing calls and on the localisation of users. The efficiency of the proposed mechanism has been investigated by simulations for dynamic channel allocation (DCA)
