Abstract
The Tactical Battlefield ATM Network will provide the communications infrastructure needed to interconnect distributed resources across the battlefield to allow rapid and intelligent use of resources. The network will open up the battlefield to a new class of applications that could not be supported by the existing systems. A soldier on the battlefield using a computer could, through the Tactical ATM Network have instantaneous access to databases and information contained anywhere in the global grid network. The communication links in conjunction with concepts such as hierarchical routing will also allow the transfer of maps, text. voice and video. While video teleconferencing would not be feasible to an individual soldier over tactical communication links it would be possible to send an image showing an over the hill view of the battlefield. This over the hill picture would be composed of information pulled from distributed databases located throughout the network
