Abstract :
Summary form only given. It has been shown that a hybrid laser, which contains both an inhomogeneously broadened and a homogeneously broadened laser media, can improve the active mode locking performance. It generates coherent and shorter pulses as compared to that by either the inhomogeneously broadened medium or the homogeneously broadened medium alone. We present the results of a numerical study of passive mode locking with a hybrid laser. Gains of the hybrid laser can be adjusted to ensure starting of the mode locking process and control the pulse bandwidth to within the lockable optical bandwidth that is governed by the saturable absorber properties and group velocity dispersion (GVD).
