  • Abstract
It is well known that Chinese is a tone language with a multi tone system, but the distinctive syllable structures relating to speech recognition have not been brought to phoneticians´ attention yet. The syllable structures and phonotactic rules are discussed and the joint probability of the initial and final syllables are given. A comparative study of the relative information transmitted by the position channel between Chinese and English shows that the syllable structures of Chinese have an advantage; they can increase the position recognition rate and syllable intelligibility. It is shown that perceiving a phoneme is based on the syllable in which it exits
