Abstract :
The analysis and design of a full bridge commutator that protects a six-pulse power converter, operating in the regenerative mode, from either a single device failure or a line voltage collapse are presented. The method of modeling the AC line voltage as viewed from the DC side and equivalent circuit models and operating principles for the post fault interval are described. The modal analysis for the circuit, including experimental verification, and graphical results which are suitable for design purposes are discussed. Simplified equations for designing a full bridge commutator are developed from the analysis. The commutator is found to be suitable for a wide range of inductive loads.<>
