Abstract :
We present a notional design for a special, high short-circuit impedance electrical transformer. The technical solution that provides for a high short-circuit voltage concerns the usage of magnetic shunts placed between the windings. This paper reports analytic sizing recipes based on 2D models for the electromagnetic field for sizing medium power units. A more complex, 3D model is used to evaluate the results of the analytic design. Numerical simulation results, by the finite element method, unveil insights in the magnetic field distribution inside the more realistic, less restrictive model, and compare satisfactorily well with the simpler, analytic results.
