Abstract :
Advances in computer aided design and manufacturing process have moved microwave switching out of the realm of mystery and black magic, and into the modern arena of open standards solutions. Utilizing the Web, powerful 3D modeling software, and state-of-the-art measurement and assembly equipment, a custom switch can now be modularized, assembled, and tested in a very short timeframe. This approach also allows customers to reuse the design and product in future applications. Solutions can incorporate a wide spectrum of devices including switches, attenuators, splitters, amplifiers, and filters to cost effectively configure a custom microwave solution. This paper addresses the tools and processes that make modular COTS microwave solutions possible. Additionally, applications are examined, compared and contrasted through the two design approach lenses.
