Abstract
This paper develops a method to acquire the relationships between the real fault distance and the varying Thevenin equivalent impedance. Multiple measurements have been taken from simulations of the Taiwan power system and their Thevenin equivalent have been calculated. Thevenin impedance and curve fitting techniques are applied to estimate the fault location. Simulation results show remarkable performances on locating the fault of load shedding and loss of generation, but show unremarkable performances on the fault of short circuit. Simulations in this paper are carried out in PSS/E and MATLAB using the model of Taiwan power system of July 2006.
