Abstract
Basic elevator principles, elevator safety hazards and regulations and several methods available to provide ascending car overspeed protection are reviewed. A pneumatic rope brake which grips the suspension ropes and stops the elevator during emergency conditions is described. The result of several tests performed on the rope brake system are discussed.<>
