Abstract :
The media characteristics, topology, and noise of four Ethernet types, standard Ethernet, thin-coax Ethernet, broadband Ethernet, and twisted-pair Ethernet, are compared. Carrier sense multiple access with collision detection, the media access control method employed by Ethernet, is reviewed. Using the comparison results, different configurations of the network are examined to determine the advantages and disadvantages for each configuration, primarily noise susceptibility, reliability, and cost.<>
