Abstract
A model-referenced adaptive control strategy combined with cross-coupled control of axial motion that is intended to improve contouring performance of multi-axis computer numerically controlled machine tools is discussed. A feedback control loop is established between the desired input feedrate and the output contour error. By specifying a contour error bound, the desired feed rate is adaptively adjusted online so that the resultant contour accuracy can be maintained within the specified bound. The development of an experimental positioning system for implementing the proposed control strategy is described. Experimental work on this system shows the effectiveness of the method.<>
