Abstract :
The feasibility of an optical frequency standard based on a /sup 199/Hg/sup +/ ion is discussed. A fractional frequency instability of 7 /spl times/ 10/sup -15/ (at 1 s) has been realized for a laser locked to the /sup 2/S/sub 1/2/-/sup 2/D/sub 5/2/ electric-quadrupole transition at 282 nm (f/sub o/ /spl ap/ 1.06 /spl times/ 10/sup 15/ Hz). The apparatus for a full systematic evaluation using two Hg/sup +/ standards is under construction.
