Abstract
A laser slopemeter is described that uses a digital technique to measure the slope of a laser beam after it has passed through the air-sea interface. By scanning the laser beam over a limited region of the sea surface information on the directional wave spectrum can be obtained. This method provides a near-instantaneous measurement of the wave slope in this area. The fast and efficient manner in which the slope of the laser beam is detected will allow the measurements made to be processed and displayed in real-time. This will enable the operator to use the instrument in a more interactive manner by monitoring the data as it is acquired
