Abstract :
The Er3+/Zn2+:LiNbO3 and Er3+/Yb3+/Zn2+:LiNbO3crystals were grown by Czochralski technique. The effect of Zn2+ ions on the optical characteristics of Er3+ ion was discussed. Zn2+ ions doping leads to an increased 1.54 μm emission in Er:LiNbO3 crystal, and a decreased 1.54 μm emission in Er/Yb:LiNbO3 crystal. Under 980 nm excitation, a cross relaxation 4I11/2 + 4I11/2 → 4F7/2 + 4I15/2 is observed in Zn/Er:LiNbO3 crystal. The reduction of 1.54 μm emission is attribution to the CR processes, 4S3/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I9/2 + 4I13/2, 4S3/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I13/2 + 4I9/2 and 4I9/2 + 4I15/2 → 4I13/2 + 4I13/2.
