Abstract
The various allowable levels of overcurrent protection, as specified by IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and the NEC (National Electrical Code), are reviewed. Short-circuit current ratings of contactors and starters and tests required by starter manufacturers are described. Recommendations for strict compliance with the NEC 110-10, which requires type 2 protection for the IEC devices, are presented.<>
