Abstract :
This paper has investigated the use of a Rogowski transducer for measuring large current pulses. It has explained why passive L/r integration is generally unsuitable due to rings on the measured waveform. Passive CR integration with an appropriately terminated coil is possible for current pulses of duration up to typically 5 μs but suffers from low sensitivity. Active plus CR integration yields the best results and can be used for current pulses of up to 50 ms duration without adverse droop effects. This method maybe used for pulses of much higher magnitude (e.g. 500 kA) than described in this paper, using the same coil dimensions. The only limitation is dI/dt which can result in large values of induced coil voltage, e. Typical coils produced by PEM are limited to 25 kA/μs although special coils rated at 100 kA/μs have been produced
