Abstract
The main performance indexes, mean time between failure, mean time to repair, availability and reliability of Itaipu HVDC transmission system are presented and commented upon. General maintenance aspects with emphasis on flashovers in the bypass breaker, and the valve hall fire detection system are discussed. Operational aspects about high-fire and reduced voltage operation, parallel operation and double monopolar operation are also discussed
