Abstract :
In this paper, the authors present a novel, forty-two volt, lead acid battery design having horizontal plates. The horizontal plate configuration allows two lugs to be placed on each plate so that the plate´s conductive distances are reduced. The short conductive distances coupled with a thin plate design that reduces the battery´s ionic resistance results in a high power battery. The proposed battery design is sealed and uses absorbent glassmat material (AGM) for plate separation. The horizontal plates are subjected to mechanical compression to give long life. The design allows for package flexibility and some examples of different packaging configurations are given. The authors also provide some performance projections for the designs
