Abstract :
The fourth generation cellular technology combines surfing the Internet with high data rates and mobility. One technology used is WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access). The Institut for Rundfunktechnik (IRT) is currently examining the potential of both a fixed and a mobile version for broadcast applications. For this purpose, the IRT is operating a WiMAX pilot project in Munich. In cooperation with Alcatel and Alvarion, the IRT is testing WiMAX equipment and receivers with focus on how the WiMAX technology supports the requirements of broadcasters. In this context, the IRT conducts performance evaluations to determine possible up- and downlink data rates. The special attention of the major players and the audience wins who is reporting first relevant news in the direct competition to rivals. That´s the reason IRT is focusing on field trials where ENG (Electronic News Gathering) takes center stage.
