Abstract
Techniques to prevent the onset of tachycardias by pacemakers have not been studied thoroughly. In order to be able to evaluate possible prevention algorithms, a computer model of reentry circuits was investigated, with emphasis on simplicity, easily understandable results, and an intuitive user interface. Several models use nodes and pathways, of which the refractory periods and conduction velocities can be defined. The basic model consists of a circular pathway with two branches representing the conduction pathways to the electrodes. Though the basic model is often used to explain supraventricular reentry tachycardias, it can only be used for AV nodal-reentry tachycardias. With accessory pathways, the basic model should be extended with a second branch from the circular pathway to the electrode. The model can be used to investigate tachycardia induction, prevention and termination algorithms including the influence of changing parameters (cathecholamines) outside of the laboratory environment
