Abstract
A description is given of the development of the COMPAS arrhythmia and ST-segment algorithm, which has lasted for over a decade. It began with a lengthy research and development phase during which the fundamental characteristics of the software were derived in a heuristic manner by a large staff at a cost of millions of dollars. The second phase of development coupled the algorithm with an advanced package by means of a multiroutine systems-software package. The current phase involves algorithm and systems-software development based on definitions and advice by medical advisors, results from clinical test sites, and inputs from the customer physicians
