Abstract
Phase noise from oscillator instabilities poses a limitation to the efficiency of data recovery in orthogonal frequency division multiplexed (OFDM) systems and basically comprises of two effects: a phase error common to all OFDM subcarriers called the common phase error (CPE) and inter-carrier interference (ICI). This paper brings to light a third component which is a change in magnitude common to all the subcarriers which we will call the common magnitude error (CME). Estimation and correction of the CME can be done in a similar manner to CPE estimation and correction by using the reference information on the pilot subcarriers.
