Abstract :
Identifying the characteristics, structure, or features of a given set of data is the most essential step prior to the classification, recognition, or even understanding process. The identified features must preserve the nature of the data and the irrelevant features should be excluded after the extraction process. This study concerns the extraction of the actual 2-dimensional geometrical frame of each element from a set of given 2-dimensional structural objects. Our approach is based on self-organizing mapping and Karhunen-Loeve transformation. The number of clusters needs not be satisfied in advance as in the other approaches.
