Abstract :
Future mobile networks are foreseen to provide broadband services (i.e. multiparty, multimedia calls). In order to ensure their economic feasibility and successful deployment, such networks would benefit from being introduced as mobile access networks to B-ISDN. In this paper some possible scenarios describing the relation between UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications network, a third generation mobile network) and B-ISDN are presented. The scenarios vary from one extreme that develops UMTS as a separate overlay network to the other that allows UMTS introduction as an access network in any B-ISDN environment. The preferred scenario is identified and the functional requirements imposed on B-ISDN are presented
