Abstract
The research work reported in this paper is part of an ongoing, project that is investigating, the use of cordless radio technology in the rural local access network. We describe the general rural network architecture proposed and a voice/data transmission protocol that takes advantage of the natural conversational speech protocols. Our results show such a system can support bulk data services over the time division duplex (TDD) channels of the second generation cordless systems. Thus, an ISDN like access structure is achieved within a cordless system optimized for voice services
