Abstract
We discuss the prospects of exploiting coherently driven light-matter interactions in semiconductor quantum dot - cavity systems. Regimes of pulse-triggered single photons and steady-state exciton inversion are introduced, and a connection to recent experiments with planar photonic crystals and micropillar cavities is made.
