Abstract :
The paper presents a scheme of a multipulse speech coder optimized for a bit rate of 9.6 kbit/s and for applications requiring a cost-effective solution with a good trade-off between quality and complexity. This scheme is based on a new and efficient confined pulse search procedure which guarantees correct pulse position differential coding. Optimal values were established for the allocation of bits in coding the pulse differences and the number of pulses available in the confined search phase. Through performance evaluation, the paper shows the advantages of the new solution, giving results in terms of the ordinary and segmental SNRs. Finally, from a series of informal listening tests it was seen that the coder proposed provides a good perceptive speech quality
