Abstract
The ATM will likely be used in the future to provide mission critical communications for military applications that require virtually fault-transparent service. To ensure this quality of service in a hostile environment, communication between ATM nodes requires strong security. An ATM coordination protocol effective for rerouting groups of virtual paths away from a network failure is proposed. Authentication of ATM end-points is combined with a protocol used to switch working traffic to protection resources. Authentication allows the source and sink end-points to absolutely identify each other such that a third host cannot impersonate one of the two
