Abstract
Theoretical bounds are derived for a FH-CDMA microcellular network. The influence of base station diversity in the uplink is studied. It is shown that the soft handover area should extend beyond the classical hard handover boundaries. Specifically, the soft handover area should include as much as half the number of mobile stations around cell boundaries. Computer simulations are carried out to assess the validity of the theory. The trade-offs of a handover strategy applied to cellular network planning are finally discussed
