Abstract
A number of second order sliding mode (SOSM) control algorithms are analyzed in the frequency domain via the describing function method. It is shown that in the presence of parasitic dynamics the system driven by a SOSM algorithm would exhibit chattering. The mechanism of chattering generation is analyzed. Further, it is substantiated why chattering is an inherent feature of the sliding mode principle and therefore unavoidable
