  • Abstract
    A novel bistable permanent magnet electromagnetic clutch (BPMEC) unit is introduced into wheel drive so as to turn rigid connection between hub and motor into flexible form, thus remit mechanical and electromagnetic impulsion. Working principle of this idea is conceptually demonstrated. Electromagnetic relations of the BPMEC unit are presented, as well as performance calculated and verified by experiments measured on a prototype. Finally, general design principles are investigated in detail by studying leakage coefficient which is obtained from analytical solution.
