Abstract :
Ad-hoc networks, where a node may enter, leave or move inside the network without any need for prior configuration, make the design of a suitable network architecture challenging. We consider as "network architecture" the behavioral model describing with logical consistency the rules determining the physical (or for other cases the network) connectivity. A network architecture is considered to be suitable if the performance metrics reveal such a network behavior or system performance that certain applications can be supported. While most of the research work focuses upon the steady state performance metrics, the transient performance metrics have not received the deserved attention. The primary focus of this work is on the transient behavior of an enhanced HiperLAN/2-based network that employs a dual mode of operation: the standard mode at 5 GHz and a second ad-hoc mode at 60 GHz. The centralized ad-hoc network architecture (CANA) describes the rules concerning the physical connectivity for this dual mode of operation. The values of the transient performance metrics are calculated here, and a qualitative evaluation process reveals the overhead required for the network\´s efficient operation.
