Abstract
The author provides an overview of the current research and development directions in knowledge engineering, classifying research problems in the area according to three attributes: (a) completeness of knowledge in the environment, (b) accuracy of knowledge available in the environment, and (c) knowledge about the objective and/or specifications of the problem. Approaches to solving problems in this area are discussed, and challenges that lie ahead are examined
