Abstract :
This paper presents the performances of a combined coding scheme that uses VL (VL)-runlength limited (RLL) codes (used for timing recovery purposes in many communication media) and RS (RS) block codes (in order to minimize the overall error probability of the system.) In the first part of the paper four VL code structures ar presented, and the error propagation behavior is evaluated for each of them. In the second part extended Monte Carlo simulations have been used in order to evaluate the error probability of the overall system as function of the channel error probability. Based on those results, in the final part a number of conclusions are highlighted.
