Abstract :
Recent research indicates that changing the U.S. healthcare system to broad adoption of standards based electronic health information systems would save up to US$77 billion each year through improvements, such as reduced hospital stays, avoidance of duplicative and unnecessary testing, more appropriate drug utilization, and other efficiencies. For this reason, Epic Systems together with the largest Health Management Organizations (HMO) in the U.S. built a US$4 billion integrated healthcare information system for 560 medical offices and 40 hospitals. This project created the largest electronic medical record system in the world servicing 8.5 million members. The U.S. Government also recently funded almost US$19 billion within the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) for healthcare IT initiatives.
