Abstract
We have compared and discussed the performance of several simple PMD compensators with PMD robust modulation formats such as dispersion managed (DM) solitons and RZ with large power margins. The latter are found to be comparable with 2-3 DOF PMD compensators, and can be expected to be a realistic alternative especially if used in combination with error correcting codes.
